Principal Teachers – Guidance
The Guidance Teachers are a key link between pupils, Parents/Carers and teaching colleagues. They will work with pupils throughout their learning journey during their time with us, supporting them as they make decisions about their next steps through, and beyond, life at the Academy. Their role is to provide guidance to pupils, in terms of their progress, their personal and social development and their careers education.
When pupils enrol at Banff Academy they will be allocated to a Guidance House. We have four Houses: Boyndie, Crovie, Deveron and Marnoch. Each House has two classes in S1-S5 and one class in S6. Siblings are mostly placed in the same House with the same Guidance Teacher.

Guidance Teachers are promoted staff and work closely with Register Tutors to ensure each pupil has regular contact with a member of staff who knows them well. The Register Tutor has daily contact during morning Registration whilst the Guidance Teachers teach the PSE lesson each week. Personal and Social Education (PSE) is a timetabled lesson in all year groups. The PSE programme consists of a variety of themes and topics that have been designed so that the content matches the level of maturity of the pupils. In each year of the PSE programme there are common themes that are important throughout a young person’s development to adulthood. These include:
- developing personal qualifications and skills;
- developing personal relationships;
- reviewing progress;
- developing study skills;
- skills of decision-making and problem solving;
- careers education;
- health education;
- caring for oneself and others
In S1/2/3 the PSE programme delivers Broad General Education Health & Wellbeing entitlements whilst in the Senior Phase experiences are based on Skills for Learning, Skills for Life and Skills for Work. Guidance teachers hold progress meetings with pupils at key transition stages during their school career.
Guidance Teachers work very closely with our Additional Support for Learners department to ensure that those pupils who have Additional Support Needs are being effectively monitored and supported utilising all school based Universal and Targeted resources available.
Guidance Teachers also provide important links with other Aberdeenshire Children’s Service Network and Banff Area GIRFEC support services available for pupils and their families including:

Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) is Scotland’s national policy to help children and young people grow, develop and reach their full potential. Its focus is to improve outcomes for children and their families based on a shared understanding of their wellbeing.
Where needed, GIRFEC links day-to-day work in education, health, policing, social work and the voluntary sector – in fact any organisation whose staff come into direct contact with children. It makes it easier for those different organisations to communicate consistently with each other, and with parents, carers, children and young people.
GIRFEC provides a structure that helps people to work in the same way and use the same language. This allows discussions with the child and their family to focus on what is good in a child’s life, and what might need attention or support.
It’s the bedrock for all children’s services and can also be used by practitioners in adult services who work with parents or carers.
The approach helps practitioners focus on what makes a positive difference for children and young people – and how they can act to deliver these improvements. Getting it right for every child is being threaded through all existing policy, practice, strategy and legislation affecting children, young people and their families.
What Getting it Right for Every Child means:
For children, young people and their families:
- They understand what is happening and why
- They have been listened to carefully and their wishes have been heard and understood
- They will feel confident about the help they are getting
- They are appropriately involved in discussions and decisions that affect them
- They can rely on appropriate help being available as soon as possible
- They will have experienced a more streamlined and co-ordinated response from practitioners
- Putting the child or young person at the centre and developing a shared understanding within and across agencies
- Using common tools, language and processes, considering the child or young person as a whole, and promoting closer working where necessary with other practitioners

It is very important that parents/carers keep the school informed of the pupil’s home circumstances and any change of address/telephone/medical needs/emergency contact etc. should be notified to the Guidance Teacher as soon as possible.
